Chicken lasers v space lasers

Building what the market wants v what you want to build–or can you do both?

I spend a lot of time talking with founders. These are my people, because they say crazy genius stuff. Last week I talked with a founder who summed up the technical founders’ dilemma in the most awesome way ever.

“We’re building space lasers here. But we put out a little chicken laser, as a test, and everyone we talk to wants chicken lasers. Now people ask how what we’re building is better than a knife. Worse, others are asking about duck lasers. But we’re building space lasers! We don’t have any passion for the chicken laser market.”
